Sea Palms and Giddy Surf

Cape Flattery, Washington State

The rugged coastline of Cape Flattery, at the extreme Northwest corner of the US mainland, is one of the most dramatic anywhere on Earth. But the light was not ideal for the usual iconic images of misty headlands and tree-covered seastacks. Instead I looked for something else to photograph, and only then noticed the surging waves directly below me. It was a perfect opportunity to "play with motion".

Shooting slow time exposures with moving objects, whether it's wind, waves or animals on the move, is always a gamble, requiring experimentation and frankly, a lot of blind luck.  I probably took over a hundred shots of this scene, clicking the cable release every time a wave rolled in. Most of the pictures didn't work, for a host of reasons, but this one immediately caught my eye. It was different than all the rest, as the foam danced gracefully over the shoreline.  Could I have planned that?  Never.
