 Black-winged Stilts (Himantopus himantopus)

Chambal Sanctuary, Madhya Pradesh, India

I came to this small wildlife sanctuary south of Delhi to look for endangered Gharials, rare fish-eating relatives of the crocodile.  But the birds here were also quite spectacular - like these courting stilts on a shallow sandbar.

Traveling in India, with it's astonishing population density, it is frankly surprising that there is any wildlife left at all.  That there continues to be is testimony to both the persistence of life in even marginal habitats, and the commitment to habitat protection by the Indians themselves.  This sanctuary was created to protect gharials, but as is so often the case, other rare creatures found their way here - and thrived : including one of the rarest of all - the Ganges River Dolphins. I saw them, but never got a picture.
