King Penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus)
South Georgia Island
I once said that if I had one week left to live I would want to spend it on the island of South Georgia, one of the most spectacular corners of the planet. (Now that I have grandchildren, however, I may have to re-think this a bit) Still, it remains one of my favorite places on Earth - a staggering combination of wildlife and wild landscapes like nowhere else.
On this recent trip I stumbled onto this adult penguin apparently getting nostalgic for his youth -- and hanging out with a gang of penguin chicks, known as "oakum boys," all with nothing much to do.
