Wild Mountain Ladyslipper Orchids
(Cypripedium montanum)
Methow Valley, Washington
I have been trying to find these for years: wandering trails, consulting guidebooks, but always striking out. Until now. This past month, I followed a tip from an old friend and stumbled onto a location for these rare, wild orchids in the Methow Valley of Eastern Washington State. I would have been happy with one or two, but was astonished to find hundreds of them bursting into bloom, often in extravagant clumps like this. Spectacular.
