Picture of the Month
April 2009
Just a few years ago, this tiny fox was among the most endangered species in the United States. Now, thanks to a remarkably successful reintroduction and habitat restoration program, they are making a strong comeback.
I recently spent a week in California's Channel Islands with my good friend Steve Shuey, following these wild foxes. It was the middle of the breeding season, so there was lots of activity. Here, two pairs of foxes converged on the boundary of their territories - and a bitter, but brief, fight broke out.
I will be going back to the island in June to continue documenting these wonderful animals...and hoping to find them with new pups.
