Picture of the Month

AURORA BOREALIS, CENTRAL ALASKA
OCT 28/29, 2003

A major solar flare occurred this past week, causing an extraordinary show of northern lights that was visible in many parts of the world. Hearing of the event, I flew to Fairbanks Alaska on October 28, and drove out into the countryside to try and get some pictures.

For about an hour that night, the sky was aflame, with dancing curtains of red and green, the most incredible show I had ever seen. The images here are just a sample of the images that I got that night - examples of the pure, unpredictable joy of light.

(Fuji Velvia 100, 8-30 sec exposures)
