Picture of the Month
May 2009
Golden Langur (Trachypithecus geei)
Shemgang district, Bhutan
I recently spent two weeks in the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan, concentrating on wildlife and landscapes. Unlike it's neighbor Nepal, Bhutan has protected vast tracts of primary forest - the sight of mile after mile of unbroken forest canopy was truly breath-taking. These endangered primates, whose range is restricted to Bhutan and a small area of neighboring India, find a vital refuge in these forests.
In other news, my story on Amazon River Dolphins has just appeared in the June 09 issue of National Geographic Magazine. To get a preview, click on the photo below.
As is so often the case, some of my favorite pictures didn't appear in the story : to see some of these, go to : http://kevinschafer.com/dolphins.html
